Unsurprisingly, there are very few pansexual characters in movies. In fact, it was harder than you might have thought to compile this list of five pansexual movies. Pansexual characters are frequently not named or acknowledged as being such in their actual film, as you’ll see further down the list, and it’s only after the filmmakers authenticate their sexuality in some way.
This isn’t always the case, though, and if you’re looking for a movie to watch with pan representation, this list of the pansexual film is a fantastic place to start looking.
1. Star Wars Movie: Lando Calrissian Character
There were numerous rumors that Lando Calrissian, the slick-talking smuggler originally encountered in The Empire Strikes Back, was actually pansexual in the weeks preceding the publication of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
These rumors were mostly based on the statements made by Solo co-writer Jonathan Kasdan, who said he saw Lando as a pansexual character.
Jonathan Kasdan stated to The Huffington Post in 2018 that “Donald and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality] has a flexibility to it.” I really wanted to include a character in this movie which was more overtly LGBT. I firmly believe that the time is now for that.
As you can see, even the authors who put forth the pretense of supporting these LGBT characters are aware that their responses amount to a bit of a cop-out.
Later in the conversation, Kasdan added, “He doesn’t make any strict regulations. “I find it enjoyable,”
2. Deadpool Movie: Deadpool Character
Deadpool is blatantly pansexual in the comics, making out with characters like Thor, Spider-Man, and others. Many writers who have contributed to Deadpool throughout the years have acknowledged that they thought of the character as pansexual while they wrote, each in their own unique ways.
The character’s co-creator Fabian Nicieza has also hinted as much. However, others have questioned his response for mistaking pansexuality for its own sexual identity and attributing the character’s sexual fluidity to his constantly shifting regeneration cells.
That doesn’t mean important for our purposes, though, because the actual query is whether the character in the two Deadpool movies, which were released in 2016 and 2018, is pansexual or not. In those movies, which star actor Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, the character is in a heterosexual relationship with a lady named Vanessa. This connection catalyzes several events in the movie. However, despite Reynold’s portrayal of the character being openly pansexual (particularly in the second movie), he can and does flirt with nearly anyone in view.
Instead, it’s the result of a few jokes that are, even for Deadpool, at best, in poor taste. The phrase “Deadpool wants to have sex with anything that moves” is used more often than “Deadpool identifies as this legitimate, valid sexuality” in any references to his orientation as a pansexual.
Ryan Reynolds has stated that he’d be open to exploring the character’s sexuality in a more authentic manner (one that doesn’t entail animated unicorns tucked away in the credits). But whether or not later Deadpool films would grant this wish is still up in the air.
